Improving Patient Outcomes

Alternative Treatments for Chronic Pain and Muscle Rehabilitation
RS Medical offers a durable medical equipment (DME) portfolio focused on providing patients with alternatives to medication for pain management and muscle rehabilitation.

Chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders are not resolved with a single treatment or modality. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach and several treatment options to adjunctively manage pain and improve function so that patients can get back to normal activities of daily life.

Most treatment algorithms rely on extensive medication management and surgical intervention. Despite well-documented clinical guidelines, state law and electronic records monitoring, today’s headlines remain filled with reports of over-use and abuse of narcotics among patients with chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions. Additionally, the cost and medical risks associated with surgical intervention and maintenance often mean that patients suffer for several months or years before these options become available.

Earlier intervention of non-pharmacological, alternative treatments can improve a patient’s quality of life. Offering products for patients to use in the comfort of their own home can also provide independence and motivation to actively participate in their care and clinical improvement.

Rehabilitate Muscles Following Injury or Surgery with Electrotherapy
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is used to elicit involuntarily muscle contractions using a waveform that excites motor nerves. Stimulators programmed with NMES provide stimulation in an on/off, contract/relax pattern that repeats over several minutes. Therapeutic benefits of NMES include:

  • Increase blood flow to the site of injury to promote faster healing.
  • Reduce muscle spasms caused by soft tissue damage following a car or work accident, minimally invasive procedures, or invasive surgical procedures.
  • Re-educate muscle, prevent disuse atrophy, and increase range of motion for patients that have weakened muscles due to lack of use or activity, compensation in their gait (walking pattern) to protect from pain, or patients recovering from arthroscopic surgery or total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

The Synergy of Sequential Stimulation in the RS-4i Plus
Get the benefits of deep pain relief and restorative muscle stimulation in a single treatment with the use of the RS-4i Plus Sequential Stimulation. The unique stimulator program delivers virtually any combination of interferential and NMES in a single, customizable treatment session.  Pre-modulated, or pre-mixed, interferential output allows the placement of electrode pads on specific muscle groups so the treatment can lead right into muscle stimulation therapy without moving any pads or reprogramming the device.

Ease Cervical Pain and Relax Tense Muscles with Traction
Cervical traction gently stretches and releases muscles, reduces muscle spasm, and improves range of motion and flexibility. Blood vessels compressed by rigid muscles are allowed to relax, enabling blood flow and lymphatic circulation to return to the affected area.

RS Medical manufactures Pronex™, a unique cervical traction device that supports the natural curvature of the cervical spine, gently stretches soft tissue and provides an even distraction in the anterior and posterior cervical discs for the management of chronic cervical pain. In addition to cervical musculature, Pronex can provide a stretch that extends into the suboccipital muscles, the muscles that extend to the front of the skull, and down to the trapezius and thoracic areas. This stretch and release may help to relieve several conditions associated with cervical neck pain such as headache, TMJ and back pain.

Comfortrac™ is also available from RS Medical for patients that require additional traction force up to 50 lbs. This comfortable, easy-to-use device delivers precise traction with a gauged hand pump and easily adjustable slide stand for targeted relief of chronic cervical pain.

Improve Posture and Mobility with Spinal Bracing
The Fastrack spinal bracing options from RS Medical reinforce neutral posture of the lumbar spine, off-load pressure on the spine caused by stomach weight and can protect from over-extension, over-flexion, or twisting during activity. This is particularly important during expensive spinal column stimulator trials when it is critical to keep stimulator leads in position while the patient is able to remain active.

Advancing the Patient Experience

Individualized Patient Instruction
Individualized patient care is critical to clinical success, especially when patients receive durable medical equipment intended to be used at home. At no additional cost to the insurer or patient, RS Medical provides individual patient instruction sessions in-person or over the phone to every patient. This personal instruction lends to a higher rate of compliance, a positive product experience and better clinical outcomes.

RS Medical’s FREE instruction sessions include:

  • Product customization to the patient’s clinical diagnosis and body shape.
  • Demonstration of how to use the product.
  • A summary of the clinical benefits of using the product.
  • For stimulators: electrode pad placement, pad care tips and resupply instructions.

Highly trained Service Representatives
RS Medical has trained sales and service representatives dedicated to providing exceptional service to physicians and customers throughout the United States. Local RS Medical sales representatives work closely with clinicians to help their patients resume healthy, active lifestyles. Our Vancouver, WA based Customer Service team receives advanced clinical and product training to respond quickly to patient needs over the telephone.

Reducing the Cost of Care

HCP Chart 3 - Low Back Pain.png

Chronic Conditions are Costly
In the US alone, more than 70 million people suffer from chronic pain, which causes disability in more people and contributes to higher healthcare expenditures than cancer and cardiac diseases combined. Annually, the cost of treating painful muscle conditions (including medical treatment and devices), workers compensation, and lost productivity exceeds $100 billion.

Patients with chronic pain or muscle dysfunction are also less active, which can lead to depression, weight gain, muscle weakness and common co-morbidities including obesity, heart failure, diabetes, liver and/or kidney disease. These conditions become additive and make the treatment of chronic conditions difficult and extremely costly as time goes on. For example, approximately 10% of patients that report low back pain persist into the chronic phase, yet this small percent accounts for 65% to 85% of all healthcare costs associated with low back pain.

Improve Care While Saving Money
RS Medical is concerned with identifying, offering and supporting best practices to reduce unnecessary spend to treat chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions. Our goal to save money while improving care is even more compelling.

For the same money spent on medications, a patient could have an effective device that has no drug-specific side effects or addiction concerns. The average cost of using the RS-4i Plus stimulator, for example, is less than $6 per day without any associated gastrointestinal side effects. The average cost to maintain a patient on a pain drug and muscle relaxant can be more than $8 per day.

Early intervention provided by electrotherapeutic, traction and bracing options can save downstream costs and reduce utilization. Alternative DME therapies can also help meet the growing unmet need for safe and effective alternatives to narcotics and muscle relaxants.
