A Life-Altering Injury in the Field
During his service, Manny’s tank was struck by an RPG — a rocket‑propelled grenade.
“An RPG is called a rocket propelled grenade. It's a heat seeking round, and it hit the turret and burned through 10 inches of steel. It has an explosive charge that throws that hot steel in, and that's what wounded me. Wounded me in both legs. Picture hot steel lodged in your legs.”
The pain was immediate and overwhelming.
“It's an excruciating pain. I don't wish that upon anyone.”
Despite the injury, Manny focused on making sure the tank remained operational and that someone could continue leading and firing the main gun. His fellow soldiers helped push him out of the vehicle.
“They pushed me out of the tank, so I fell down approximately 10 to 12 feet and hit the ground hard.”
